Last month we brought word Facebook was working on a breaking news app that would allow publishers to push Twitter-like breaking news updates to a standalone app. Today we learned a little more about it… including the likely name.
According to a report from The Awl (via The Verge), the company’s big news push will be called Notify and will enable users to receive notifications from subscribed ‘stations’ or news organisations.
According to screenshots posted within the report, users will be able to choose between stations like Vevo, HuffPo, Buzzfeed, while also selecting a range of other ‘providers.’
As previously reported, these “blast” notifications will present headlines along with a link to take users to the rest of the story.
Its Instant Articles platform enables content owners to easily publish entire stories to their Facebook pages. Meanwhile the Trending tab on the homepage, offers quick access to a personalised array of stories from around the web.
News appears to be the latest social media battleground (after photos, videos, live-streams, verified profiles, et cetera, at cetera.).
Twitter is boosting its own traditionally-strong presence with the new Moments tab, which brings media-rich content from partners on a carousel of images, vines and videos.
