New Destiny gameplay details and characters revealed

Ahead of the game’s release next year, a raft of new Destiny gameplay and character details have been revealed.

Bungie’s eagerly awaited follow-on to the hugely popular Halo franchise, Destiny will launch for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in late 2014, but until now relatively little has been known about the futuristic first-person shooter.

Now, however, GameInformer has released a mass of new Destiny gameplay details, with the upcoming title’s narrative outline, character options and in-game locations all detailed to whet the next-gen gaming appetite.

According to the gaming publication, Bungie’s Destiny will feature a core gaming experience markedly similar to that of past Halo titles, with a “tight loop” of battling groups of varied enemies set to take up the time of a lead character that can level up along a branching upgrade tree.

Although Bungie is hesitant to refer to Destiny as an MMO title, it has suggested that “people who like MMOs will enjoy it”, and has revealed that it intends to offer a range of new locations, storylines and further content for the game after the full title is released to retailers.

Quoting Destiny’s Technical Director, Chris Bucher, the latest reports have suggested that the game is all about discovering the places gamers will be able to explore, as well as interacting with a range of alien groups to find out what happened to the moon.

Set in a distant future, Earth’s moon has been infested by a Hive of aliens after its surface was splintered and spread around space. Although it was once home to a human colony, little evidence of this former lunar landing still remains when the game’s action takes place.

Other locations set to feature in Destiny include a post war Mars, inhabited by battling ‘Cabal’ and ‘Vex’ aliens, Venus which has transformed into a jungle planet and Old Russia where the real world Cosmodrome acted as humanities bridge to outer space.

While the game’s story culmination is sure to remain a closely guarded secret until launch, Bungie has revealed that the first game in the Destiny franchise has a definitive narrative conclusion. Aside from the standard campaign mode, a mass of online and multiplayer options are set to be made available.
