Microsoft opens registration for real-time Skype Translator tool

Microsoft is inviting Skype users to sign up for the opportunity to trial its revolutionary conversation translation tool.

The tech from Microsoft Research, which was announced and previewed in May this year, allows folks to chat to each other in different languages and have the conversation translated in real time.

The Translator service allows folks to begin talking and see a transcript of the call displayed on screen in their native language.

Microsoft is launching the tool soon with a limited number of languages and a few ‘rough edges.’

“Skype Translator is a brand new feature from Skype and it’s still learning and improving the way it translates calls,” the company claims. “As such, it’ll have a few rough edges but the more conversations it translates, the better it’ll get.

“The preview of Skype Translator will initially be available for Windows 8.1 computers and tablets only (when more devices are supported we’ll let you know). It will support a few languages at first.”

The languages featured in the preview include Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Eventually Skype Translator will support a whopping 45 languages during voice calls, video calls and instant messages.

Users must be running Windows 8.1 on desktop or tablet in order to be eligible for the preview, which has a limited number of spots available.
