How to back up your iPhone before installing iOS 10

How to back up your iPhone: We all keep things that are precious to us on our phones, whether it’s our family photos, apps or favourite music. Ahead of the big iOS 10 update, here’s what you need to know before downloading.

Backing up your iPhone makes a carbon copy of what’s on your device, storing it either online or on your laptop.

iPhone backups can be completed in two different ways – either through iCloud or iTunes. Whichever you choose affects the way you restore your device. So it’s worth thinking about which method you prefer.

We’ll do a rundown of both ways, so you can work out which suits you.

How to back up an iPhone – iCloud

Having a backup of your phone online has big benefits. For example, if your phone breaks when you’re away from your laptop, you can restore it. All you need is access to the internet and your iCloud details.
How to back up:
1. To begin, go into Settings and make sure that your phone has backup enabled under iCloud. (Settings>iCloud>Backup).
2. Once this is configured you can start backing up your phone – select ‘Backup’ to start. (Settings>iCloud>Backup>Backup now).
3. Make sure that you remain connected to the internet until the progress bar is complete. This might take a while depending on how much information is being backed up.
4. Once the bar completes, your iPhone is backed up.

Unfortunately, Apple only provides 5GB of storage with new iPhones. This means you’ll only have a certain number of backups before you run out of space.

Happily, you can manage your backups through the Settings menu (Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage storage).

Here, you can delete previous backups, as well as manage what gets backed up to iCloud.

Frustrated by the lack of iCloud storage? You can buy more space from Apple. Prices start at £0.79 a month for 50GB and increase to £6.99 a month for 1TB.

iTunes is a great place from which to manage your iPhone. It shows you exactly what you have on your device, as well as how much space you have remaining.

How to back up:
1. To manually back up your iPhone to iTunes, plug it into your Mac or PC with iTunes installed and open.
2. Once plugged in, your iPhone will appear in iTunes. Select it, then click on ‘Backup now’.
3. Keep your iPhone plugged in until the backup is complete.

You can configure your iTunes to automatically back up your iPhone every time you plug it in. To do so, just access your iPhone in iTunes and select ‘Automatically backup: This computer’.

And that’s all you need to know to make sure your files are safely stored.
