Fujifilm’s new X-A5 mirrorless camera launches with a seriously powerful lens

Fujifilm has taken the covers off the X-A5, a entry-level mirrorless camera with a properly powerful powerzoom lens.

Featuring a 24.2-megapixel APS-C Bayer sensor Bayer rather than Fujifilm’s X-Trans, the X-A5 is packed with features, such as on-chip phase detection and an intelligent Hybrid AF  system for rapid autofocus.

Auto Bluetooth image transfer between the camera and paired smartphones, and a 180 degree touchscreen for fans of high-quality selfies are also appealing features of the X-A5.

But it the XC15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens which is the standout feature for the compact camera. It’s the first motorised powerzoom lens in Fujifilm’s lineup, and at 136g it’s a lightweight and compact lens that sits neatly on the X-A5’s small frame but still offers people getting started with photography a powerful zoom lens with a 15mm focal length and optical image stabilisation.

Other features in the X-A5 include 4K video capture, though only at 15fps, and Full HD footage recording at 60fps, with a microphone jack making it a camera that’s suitable for vloggers keen to take a stab at becoming YouTube stars.

Designed to replace the X-A3, the X-A5 comes with a variety of Film Simulation Modes expected from Fujifilm cameras. These include settings from portrait photos and mono shots to more advanced filters such as ‘HDR Art’ and ‘Fog Remove’.

Scheduled for a February 8 launch, the X-A5 will come in a kit from for £549 and will be available in Black, Pink or Brown colour options in keeping with Fujifilm’s retro camera aesthetics.
