Amazon takes to the skies with its new fleet of cargo planes in a continuing attempt to improve its delivery times.
Amazon Prime customers can expect delivery of their packages to be even speedier in the coming months following Amazon revealing its own fleet of cargo planes. They’ve even named their first official Prime cargo plane ‘Amazon One’ and it is set to launch this Friday in Seattle, Washington.
Previously the online retailer has worked with FedEx and UPS to deliver packages but Amazon’s troubled delivery record over the 2013 Christmas period prompted the brand to rethink its delivery strategy. Poor weather and and a sudden increase in last minute orders over the winter break caused chaos with FedEx and UPS, meaning many Amazon customers did not receive their parcels in time for Christmas.

Amazon Prime has continued to expand and as a result Amazon has leased 40 planes from Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and is using 11 of them to deliver Prime packages to users of their exclusive service. The company has said that having their own airborne delivery service allows them greater freedom and also made economic sense.
Amazon hope that these planes will give them the freedom to continue to push outside of their original remit in electronic retail.
