Facebook is said to be working on a new business-focused service that would rival efforts from LinkedIn, Microsoft, and Google.
The new website, called Facebook at Work, will give the social network a presence in the office outside of lunch times and sneaky glances at the smartphone.
According to the Financial Times, Facebook at Work will enable users to “chat with colleagues, connect with professional contacts and collaborate over documents.”
As such, it won’t just rival LinkedIn on the networking side, which you would expect. It will also rival Google Drive and Microsoft Office for online document creation and collaboration.
Apparently, Facebook at Work will still look very much like Facebook, despite its serious tone and expanded feature set. It will maintain newsfeed and groups systems, but will primarily act as a way for users to keep their online personal life separate from their work one.
It’s claimed that Facebook itself has been using such a system internally for quite some time. It’s now being tested with external companies ahead of a full launch.
According to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the company has been undergoing an “important cultural shift” of late, with more focus on privacy and security than before. Launching a professional tool like Facebook at Work would certainly see the company continuing along that trend.
It’s claimed that Facebook will not charge for its new work service, with the majority of its revenue still generated by advertising.
