Facebook’s Android app now supports Tor, lets you hide your browsing

Just because you’re on Facebook doesn’t mean you want to forgo privacy.

Facebook’s Android app now supports anonymous browsing, courtesy of Tor.

This means that users can now hide their browsing location using the market-leading anonymity service.

It’s the next step in a collaboration between Facebook and Tor that first began with Facebook permitting users to access the website directly through Tor’s anonymous browser.

Speaking to Reuters, Kate Krauss, a spokesperson for the Tor Project, said:

“Everybody in the world needs more privacy online and almost everybody is on Facebook. This will allow people to choose whether to share their location or not. For some people, this is convenience. For others it is lifesaving.”

Unfortunately for iOS users, Krauss confirmed that Tor has no plans to support Facebook’s app on the Apple platform.

Tor is a free anonymity software service that lets users hide their computer IP addresses.

It works by redirecting internet traffic through a network of volunteer relays, concealing a user’s location.

Facebook is currently the most popular social network globally, boasting 1.55 billion monthly active users as of the third quarter of 2015.
