Evernote plans branded hardware expansion with ‘new and magical’ devices

Phil Libin, CEO of popular note-taking and archiving app Evernote, has revealed the company’s plans to branch out into hardware in the coming years.

Evernote has already become one of the essential mobile apps for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone thanks to its ability to sync notes seamlessly across the various platforms as well as on the web.

Now the productivity app maker wants to team up with manufacturers to launch Evernote branded gadgets it will co-design, before eventually setting its sights on building the devices in-house.

Libin told the IDG news agency that the company envisions “new and magical” devices, rather than simply launching mobile handsets and tablets with the Evernote branding.

He said: “We won’t actually do the manufacturing, but we’ll do the co-design together. Eventually, in a few years—three, four, five –  I think we’ll be ready to do something ourselves.”

What form will these new and magical devices will take remain to be seen.

Just last year, the company teamed up with Moleskin to launch an Evernote friendly paper notebook, the pages of which were printed on a special kind of paper that allowed handwriting to be digitised.

Could this be the type of hardware Libin is referring to?

Evernote has already appeared on less traditional platforms, with the service appearing on Samsung’s Android-toting T9000 refrigerator announced at CES earlier this year.

It has also appeared within cameras and scanners, while it was also listed as a third-party app manufacturer for the forthcoming Google Glass AR specs.

Beyond the new hardware, Libin said the company is rolling out the proposed two-factor security system next month, following a hack earlier this year, which compromised 50m user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords.

The company has refused to elaborate on the CEOs comments.
