Struggling for signal? BT Mobile now lets you make calls over Wi-Fi

Following the lead of the four major mobile phone providers, BT Mobile has announced that its customers are now able to make calls over Wi-Fi, rather than having to rely solely on traditional phone signal.

However, if you’ve already got enough phone signal then there’s more good news, as BT Mobile customers can also now make phone calls over 4G. Called VoLTE, the technology allows for higher quality voice calls than were previously possible over 3G connections.

Both announcements come with the small caveat that your device will need to support the two technologies in order to make use of them, and you’ll need to dive into your phone’s quick settings to enable them too.

Once you’ve done that then it’s plain sailing, as any calls made will be taken off of your regular allowance as normal.

Less necessary than most

BT Mobile piggybacks off EE’s network, which generally has pretty good network coverage across most of the UK — reducing the need for you to rely on Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, other networks with worse coverage see more benefit from Wi-Fi calling as users find it more difficult to get signal from inside buildings.

But for those who live is especially rural areas or spend much of their time in large buildings with poor signal, these new additions should make BT Mobile a much more tempting prospect.
