Blackphone tablet incoming to protect your privacy

Remember the Blackphone? It’s a handset that puts privacy front and centre, encrypting your calls and texts, and adding an extra level of protection when surfing the web. Now its makers are planning a tablet.

“We are going to have a tablet soon,” Jon Callas, co-founder of maker Silent Circle told BBC Newsbeat.

He didn’t reveal any further details. The Blackphone runs Android, so it’s a safe bet to assume so will the tablet. Though – as with the Blackphone – Google’s apps are likely to be conspicuous by their absence.

He also said that there would be further versions of the Blackphone.

“Blackphone as it is, is our first device not our last device,” he said.

He added that the handset had been selling “very well”, but that it has limited appeal. “We expect that it is going to be a niche, but it’s a larger niche every day.”

The fewer apps available for Blackphone help it stay secure, according to Callas. “You can have social media apps which can’t get to your contacts,” he said, “games which can’t get to your network.”

The Blackphone went on sale over the summer. It features a 4.7-inch 720p HD IPS display, and is powered by a 2GHz Nvidia Tegra 4i chip with 1GB of RAM. 16GB storage is standard, but it has a microSD card slot too. On imaging duties are an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facer.

Though it’s likely anyone buying the handset is more interested in the security features than pure specs.
