BBC Two HD is to launch in the coming weeks with the British Broadcasting Corporation confirming that as of March 26, the existing BBC HD channel is to be rebranded BBC Two HD.
A move long in the works as part of the Beeb’s cutbacks and wallet tightening, the BBC HD channel, the first free-to-air high definition channel in the UK, is set to be extinguished in a little over a month with the newly announced BBC Two HD channel to replace it.
Lining up alongside the current BBC One HD channel on the corporation’s high-definition charter, the newly rebranded BBC Two HD service will be simulcast alongside its standard-definition sibling, offering HD alternatives of some of the UK’s favourite shows.
“BBC One HD has already proved to be highly valued by our audiences and I’m delighted that we’re able to follow this with the launch of BBC Two in HD,” Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two said. “The launch of BBC Two HD will allow us to showcase more of our programmes at their very best – helping to hightlight our commitment to high quality, engaging and ambitious programmes on BBC Two.”
With the BBC HD channel to cease being at 6am on Tuesday March 26, the remodelled BBC Two HD offering will launch immediately after, ensuring little change in the channel’s broadcasting.
With the likes of Top Gear, QI and The Great British Bake Off being amongst the key pulls to the new BBC Two HD channel, further broadcasting highlights for the HD offering will include Science Britannica and The Fall.
