Apple to launch new ‘TV Guide’ without Netflix support?

Apple’s big event, where the company is expected to debut a new MacBook with OLED touch bar, is only hours away, but that doesn’t mean the leaks have to stop.

With less than a day to go until the official announcements begin, Recode has reported that Apple plans to unveil a new TV Guide feature for its Apple TV platform.

The new software update will bring a Universal Search-like feature to Apple TV, allowing users to search through all the various apps for content without having to sign in and out of each app.

Recode says that the guide will aggregate content from all the user’s subscriptions and “send users directly to that content via deep links”.

And while it will undoubtedly make searching for something to binge more easy, one particular on-demand service is conspicuously missing from the new search feature.

Yes, Netflix, which has worked with Apple on several other products, including Siri integration, will reportedly not be a part of the company’s TV Guide feature.

Just why the streaming service has refused to be involved remains unclear, as does how Apple’s search feature will differ from Amazon’s similar feature on its Fire TV platform.

Although the news is yet to be confirmed, it makes sense for Apple to make such a move, building on its single sign-in feature it launched earlier this year, which allows users to log in with one set of account details to access multiple streaming apps.

And while it’s not the pay TV service Apple initially wanted to set up, before discovering how difficult it was to strike deals with media companies, it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

We’ll find out more once the Apple event kicks off at 10am PT, which is 6pm for those of us in the UK, so stay tuned for all the latest from TrustedReviews.
