Apple’s iOS sees growth in Europe, but Android still dominates

Apple’s iOS market share has seen growth in Europe’s “big five” markets.

In the UK, for instance, Apple’s mobile OS now appears on 34.1% of handsets, up from 28.6% in 2014.

That’s according to data collected by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, revealing the state of mobile devices in the three month period leading up to the end of June 2015.

Here’s how iOS fared in Europe’s key markets this year compared to Q2 2014.

  • UK – 28.6% to 34.1% (5.5% rise)
  • Germany – 10.6% to 13.2% (2.6% rise)
  • France – 14.7% to 16.8% (2.1% rise)
  • Italy – 12.3% to 12.4% (0.1% rise)
  • Spain – 6.8% to 8.8% (2.0% rise)

“Apple iOS has returned to growth across all of Europe’s ‘big five’ markets, as it recorded its first year-on-year gain in France since February 2015,” says Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at KanWP.

However, Android is still the dominant OS across Europe, holding majority share in the continent’s key markets.

That’s no surprise – there are a huge number of Android devices on offer compared to the limited selection of iOS-toting handsets.

In the UK, Android holds a 53.2% market share – that’s down from 59.3% in June last year.

Android also slipped in Germany (-6.2%) and Italy (-3.9%), although it saw growth in France (1.8%) and Spain (3.0%).

Windows currently holds third position for mobile operating system market share, although its figures are fairly lacklustre.

For example, Windows Phone market share in the UK currently stands at 11.3%. That’s 0.6% growth compared to last year, at least.

What’s more, Windows is expected to grow further this year with the upcoming release of Windows 10 Mobile, set for launch this autumn.
