Apple confirms new Mac Pro will finally arrive in 2019 — here’s what we know

In April 2017 Apple pledged to “completely rethink” its Mac Pro desktop powerhouse, but a year later, a replacement or the top-end Mac is nowhere to be seen.

Now the company has finally shed a little light on when the Mac Pro — last updated back in 2013 — will be unveiled, and power users are unlikely to be pleased.

Speaking to TechCrunch, senior Mac marketing bod, Tom Boger says the revamped tower won’t arrive until 2019.

He said: “We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community, so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product. It’s not something for this year.”

The company says it is pulling back the curtain slightly, and in-turn dropping the usual secrecy surrounding new releases, in order to aid those who may be weighing up an iMac Pro purchase instead.

He added: “We know that there’s a lot of customers today that are making purchase decisions on the iMac Pro and whether or not they should wait for the Mac Pro.”

Unfortunately for us, Apple isn’t giving away any details about the new machine, other than it’ll be ‘modular’.

The comments come amid accusations of neglect from the ‘pro’ communities, who once underpinned Apple’s customer base during the pre-iPhone era.

As a result, Apple says it has established a working group designed to understand the needs of those power users.

“We said in the meeting last year that the pro community isn’t one thing,” adds John Ternus, the vice president of Hardware Engineering.

“It’s very diverse. There’s many different types of pros and obviously they go really deep into the hardware and software and are pushing everything to its limit.

“So one thing you have to do is we need to be engaging with the customers to really understand their needs. Because we want to provide complete pro solutions, not just deliver big hardware, which we’re doing and we did it with iMac Pro. But look at everything holistically.”
