Samsung Xpress M2070W - Print Speeds

Samsung claims a healthy speed of 20ppm for the Xpress M2070W and we saw 17.1ppm on our 20-page document under test, which is respectably close. The 5-page text test gave 11.1ppm, but this is a still a good speed for a relatively inexpensive printer. The 5-page text and graphics print achieved the same speed of 11.1ppm.

A single-page copy took only 9s and 15 x 10cm photos on A4 took 18s from a PC and only a second longer from the Galaxy Young. All these are very good speeds.

Samsung Xpress M2070W - Print Quality and Costs

The print quality is above average throughout. Text is crisp and densely black, as are areas of black fill. Greyscales are generally smooth, though some tone levels are difficult to distinguish, even though representing different colours. Photos are surprisingly well reproduced, though there is some fine banding visible in areas of sea and sky in our test prints.

There’s only one integrated drum and toner cartridge specified for this printer, with a claimed yield of 1,000 pages. This has a typical cost of £35, giving a cost per page, including paper, of 4.4p. This is about 0.5p per page higher than from some of its competitors and it’s a shame there aren’t XL consumables available to bring the cost down.

Should I buy a Samsung Xpress M2070W?

The simple answer is, yes. If you want a three-in-one (no fax on this machine), which prints simply from a computer or a mobile device. There are others you could consider, like the Canon i-SENSYS MF4780w, or the Dell B1265dfw, but these are both £30-40 more than the Samsung. The Dell does have duplex print, but neither machine has NFC, so are a little more fiddly to print to from mobiles.

Verdict

The Samsung Xpress M2070W is the first machine of a new range from the company which looks to have matched connection innovation with excellent print quality and good print speed. There are a few things missing, like duplex print and a multi-function feed slot, but it still offers a lot of SOHO functionality in a neat case and at a neat price.
