Xbox One sales still lagging behind PS4 despite price cut

PS4 vs Xbox One
Retailer suggests Sony is still edging the console race

Despite ditching Kinect and having been on the receiving end of a sizeable price cut, Microsoft’s Xbox One console continues to be outsold by Sony’s rival PS4, retail John Lewis has revealed.

With the Xbox One having been plagued by slow sales since launch last November, Microsoft recently kicked out the previously mandatory Kinect peripheral, lowing the console’s price to a PS4 matching £349 in the process.

Although this lower fee has brought the 360 follow-on closer to its lead rival, the PS4 is still edging sales figures.

“Yeah, we have [seen Xbox One sales increase since Microsoft cut out the mandatory Kinect],” Johnathan Marsh, Head of Buying for Electrics and Home Technology at John Lewis, said speaking with TrustedReviews.

He added: “Sales figures are now more competitive, but still favouring Sony.”

With the two consoles having originally hit retailers within a matter of weeks of each other, the Xbox One cost a full £80 more than the PS4 at launch. Although now identically priced, it appears that the damage could already have been done to the Microsoft console.

“We had this situation where Microsoft had, let’s call it an appropriate level of stock, where Sony was still very much hand-to-mouth as the demand very much outstripped the supply,” Marsh said discussing the state of the console wars prior to the Xbox One price cut.

“The move from Xbox was definitely in order to compete on a more level pegging with Sony and that has definitely resulted in a response from the consumer as well.”

Despite these narrowing sales, he added: “The demand for Sony is still greater than what we are seeing for Xbox One right now.”

With Microsoft having earlier this month stated that Xbox One sales have doubled since Kinect was dropped, Sony’s continued dominance shows just how large a gulf there was between the two consoles to start.

No offence but why quote John Lewis - it must be the most overpriced retail store in the UK. I certainly wouldn't purchase electronics of any kind from them. Can you not ask Game or Tesco's or one of the normal chains people visit to buy electrical gadgets????

The price cut has only been in effect for 45days or so...

So sales are suppose to just jack up that much in such short span...

And it's summer drought time...No one really bothers this time of year...

I still don't personally know a single Xbox 360 owner who bought a Xbox One yet. They have bought PS4's or gone completely to Steam.

It will be interesting to see what sort of XB1 sales there are around Christmas. While they didn't beat the PS4 in sales the fact that they doubled sales of the XB1 simply because of a price cut means Microsoft is headed in the right direction.

I'm so sick of all the constant excuses from the Xbots. They have bags full of them. They're seriously deluded. People just like PS4 over Xbone. It's a fact. You really think sales are going to increase after something new just popped on the market, like the new kinectless xbox..... Enjoy your doubling of last months sales, because sales will nose dive until Christmas. Xbone is a great console, BUT, when you compare it to PS4... Xbone is a piece of crap.

Lol. So what, who expected Xbox one that's in 13 countries and already triling by 3 million to beat a ps4 that started out cheaper and in 70 countries and up 3 million in one month of a price cut.. Really..

People still actually buy hardware from those bandits in Game?

July 24, 2014, 11:58 pm

Xbox won't catch up to PS4 in global sales no matter how many tier 2 countries they launch in.

"Excuses are tools of the incompetent that build monuments to nothingness, and those who employ their use rarely accomplish anything"...good luck with that. You and microslop are in the same boat, and it's sinking fast. Start bailing water or grow some gills son, you're finished here.

This isn't really news, its pretty much common knowledge at this point and not likely to change, its just Microsoft's turn to be last place this gen thats all, its just the facts people need to start excepting that and move on.

July 25, 2014, 6:41 am

And who's fault is that really? Microsofts.. right? They should have been better prepared to release their system. I actually don't think Microsoft was ready to release its system, I think it was kind of on the fence, and Sony's announcement forced their hand into the market a year earlier than they thought.. Maybe they should have just delayed it a year.. or a few months and change the hardware or rewrite some of the codes for the system.. might have done a lot better than it has, but who knows? We can't predict an alternate universe.

That's fine as long as they continue to sell more then they was selling in America they'll be fine in the long run,and those tier two countries well help..

Can't speak for all John Lewis but Newcastle branch have always price matched for me (including some web prices) plus most things Macs, iPads and even the PS4 come with a standard 2 year guarantee. Personally I can't see why you wouldn't buy electrical gadgets from them

July 25, 2014, 8:45 am

It's clear you're wannabe press as you still don't know the difference between a new SKU (which this was as the bundle with Kinect is still $499) and a pricecut. Great $0N¥ PauperStation desperation though, it's hilarious.

July 25, 2014, 12:53 pm

No. Those tier 2 countries already bought a PS4 or WiiU.

Kinect-less Xbox One sold over twice as many units in June compared to May (( June 2014 = 197,000 )), BUT still behind the sales of Xbone bundled with Kinect in February 2014 = 258,000.

So although MS sold more consoles in June when compared to May, it still hasn't sold as
good as the Kinect bundles within previous months OR sold as good as PS4 in June 2014 = 269,000.

So as it stands the Kinect-less Xbone didn't outsell the Xbones bundled with Kinect? = Not good news really for MS when you think of it like that. So even though MS have dropped the price of Xbone by removing the Kinect it still hasn't sold like some previous sales / shipped figures.

July 25, 2014, 4:13 pm

I have a PS4... so there ya go... and a One, and a gaming PC...
still have a PS3 phatty (which call YLOD last nite) and a 360..

so there ya go... I'll be a Xbot though... cause I do love it...

Or does that make me a X-Pony Master or something similar..???

PS4 had a great launch. XB1 had a crap launch. The problem for XB1 was the price and other bonehead policies Microsoft thought would be a great idea. This sapped momentum and perceived value. Yes, the PS4 is more powerful, but I don't think that matters that much for most people if the games are good. On top of this the XB1 has the problem of being sold in fewer countries. I think the PS4 is up to 48 and the XB1 is up to 25. So yes, it makes sense that the XB1 will not do as well as the PS4 anytime soon. However, being able to double the sales by adjusting the price makes the statement that Microsoft is going in the right direction. It will probably take 1-2 years to catch up in monthly sales if not total millions sold.

July 25, 2014, 5:08 pm

The XBox One was the second most sold console in launch history.

Please explain how that is crap.

Despite lagging behind PS4, the sales to date have been extremely successful.

The problem with looking at February numbers is that it's still in the "honey moon" stage after a launch. Just like how xbone outsold PS4 (IN THE US ONLY) in December.

A bunch of xbox fans in the states but that has all changed. Even with the price cut Sony has outsold IN THE US by about 10,000 to 20,000 per week. It's going to be a tight race most the gen but in all territories Sony has regained it's crown and rightfully so.

July 25, 2014, 8:23 pm

I love the ignorant xbot mentality. NDP numbers ARE US ONLY and yeah worldwide Sony is DOMINATING too.

If you look at the countries xbox one didn't launch most of them are very small markets.

Japan is not interested at all. China is largly in favor in PS4 (if they had to choose a console).

Xbox will be #3 for a long time seeing as how even WiiU beat Xbone last month. WiiU has some great titles coming and already released, I'll be picking mine up this Christmas (instead of a worthless xbox one). I also have a gaming PC so I am missing out on very little by passing up on the $400 xbone and it's $300 every 5 years subscription that pales in comparison to PS+.

July 25, 2014, 8:24 pm

But xbone is losing terribly even in the US. Open your eyes you blind little fanboy.
