Windows 8 hits 100,000 apps
Microsoft has announced that its troubled Windows 8 OS has amassed 100,000 applications just seven months after launching.
The company announced the milestone through Twitter with the line “Thanks for a great \build! Just passed 100k apps in the Windows Store.”
It’s an impressive achievement given the level of controversy and negative feedback Microsoft’s bold OS reboot has attracted since it came to market. The numbers stack up well to other major app ecosystems, too.
Apple’s App Store took 14 months to hit 100,000 iPad-specific (Windows 8 has been designed primarily with tablets in mind, after all) apps. Android took two years, whilst Microsoft’s own Windows Phone Store took 18 months to hit the 100k mark.

Of course, this rough figure takes into count quantity rather than quality, and some have suggested that there’s an inordinate number of spam apps filling out the Windows 8 Store – or multiple low-quality applications from a single developer.
It’s not all rubbish, though, and Windows 8 has received the support of a number of major app developers in recent months. Just last week, it emerged that both Facebook and Flipboard were producing applications for a new-look Windows Store.
With the additional suggestion that Windows 8 apps might be compatible with Microsoft’s forthcoming Xbox One games console, there’ll be plenty of incentive for app developers to commit to Windows 8 over the coming years.
