Windows 8.1 Update 2 coming next month?

Microsoft could launch Windows 8.1 Update 2 on August 12 as a smaller update for the current desktop operating system.

There’s been plenty of talk about the Windows 8.1 updates of late, but it seems that the next update won’t be the one everyone is waiting for.

Most are waiting for the major update for Windows 8.1 that could bring back the revamped Start Menu that Microsoft teased during its Build developers’ conference.

Now we know that the Windows 8.1 Update 2 is apparently coming on August 12, or Patch Tuesday, thanks to Neowin sources.

However, it won’t bring that long-awaited Start Menu with it.

From the looks of it, Windows 8.1 Update 2 will be a much smaller patch for the desktop operating system. Most likely it’ll feature bug fixes, under the hood tweaks and other unnoticeable upgrades for your PC or laptop.

This fresh news falls directly in line with previous rumours that the Start Menu had been delayed.  It was originally tipped to be coming with Update 2, but reports suggested Microsoft had pushed it back for Update 3 or even Windows 10, which should arrive in 2015.

Microsoft itself has never outlined the contents of Windows 8.1 Update 2 or when the Start Menu would return, but Microsoft Operating Systems Head Terry Myerson did say at Build that the Start Menu would return with “the next iteration” of Windows.

We’re more inclined to think that this related to Windows 10 rather than a Windows 8.1 update at this point, but we’re still remaining hopeful.

The Start Menu shown off briefly at Build was a kind of hybrid, blending the tradition Windows 7 Start Menu with the Metro stylings of Windows 8 in a more accessible format.
