The BBC’s iPlayer mobile app just got a lot better – here’s why

The iPlayer mobile app has long been a savior for those who can’t watch their favorite shows live from the living room TV.

However, while it’s been possible to tune into live broadcasts for quite some time, if you miss the first few minutes of a show there’s been no way to rewind.

That changes soon with the arrival of a live restart feature for the iOS and Android apps, the company announced today on the BBC Internet blog.

The feature has been available on the iPlayer desktop website since the London 2012 Olympics and arrived on connected TV apps last summer, so it has been a long-time coming.

While users can naturally view the shows on demand after the event, it certainly boosts the options for those who wish to tune in contemporaneously.

Elsewhere, the BBC is also rolling out an iPlayer upgrade that makes 720p HD the default viewing resolution.

The Beeb is also adding a Netflix-style “visual seeking” scrubber that shows a thumbnail of the action as users scan through the action.

This will be handy if you’re looking for a certain game on Match of the Day for example.

The BBC is coming off a bumper summer for the iPlayer, with the Rio Olympics once again smashing viewership records.
