The PS4 price is a full £80 cheaper than its lead rival, the Xbox One, but that will not guarantee it success, Sony’s Chief Executive has stated.

Despite having seemingly gained an upper hand on Microsoft earlier in the year by confirming the PS4 price will be £349 in the UK compared with the £429 Xbox One price tag, Sony has remained cautious on its next-gen console efforts stating “the lowest priced system isn’t always the most successful.”

Speaking with Bloomberg during Gamescom 2013 this week, Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America claimed that although a benefit, being cheaper than the Xbox One does not ensure the PS4 will rule the next-gen roost.

“Ultimately the gamer looks at 10 year product lifecycles,” Tretton said. “They look at the software offerings, they look at the value proposition and the lowest priced system isn’t always the most successful but being cheaper than your competition is never a bad thing.”

He added: “At E3 there were missing pieces to the puzzle on a competitor’s standpoint. We knew we were going to $399 (£349) and we felt good about that but we had no idea where our competition was going to be.

“Obviously if you could draw it up on paper you would prefer to have your competition at a higher price than a lower price and I’ve lived both sides of that spectrum.”

Earlier this week Sony revealed that the PS4 release date will be held in the US on November 15 followed by a UK arrival two weeks later on November 29.

Suggesting that its lower price point has got it off to a promising start, Sony added that more than 1 million PS4 pre-orders have already been placed and that pre-release stock has already sold out.
