Samsung Z2 running Tizen OS in the works, report says

Samsung is reportedly working on a successor to the Tizen-powered Z1 handset, a new report has revealed.

The South Korean tech giant unveiled its very first Tizen OS handset back in December last year, and began selling the device on January 18.

Tizen is, of course, Samsung’s own custom-built OS, which has already appeared on some of the company’s other electronics, including televisions, smartwatches, and a reported camera.

New rumours (via TizenIndonesia) suggest the firm was happy with how its maiden voyage into Tizen smartphone-dom went, and wants to take a second stab at the market.

For starters, Samsung actually managed to sell 120,000 units of the Z1 during its first two weeks on sale.

100,000 of these were in India, with the remaining 20,000 in Bangladesh. That might not sound like much but, as Sammobile notes, Bangladesh smartphone sales only amount to 500,000 units monthly anyway, giving it a 4 per cent market share.

The latest rumours suggest the Z2 will offer slightly higher-end specs than the Z1, which could see it land as a mid-tier smartphone.

Details are thin on the ground for now, but a 960 x 540 pixel display panel has been mooted. That’s up on the Z1’s 800 x 480p screen.

The Samsung Z1 priced up at $90, offering customers a 1.2GHz dual-core Spreadtrum processor, 512MB of RAM, 3G, Wi-Fi, and a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera.
