Samsung: Half of all the 4K TVs we sell are curved

Some people have questioned the value of curved TVs, but Samsung claims sales show that people love the idea.

The proof, says Samsung, is that half of all the 4K TVs it sold in the US in 2014 were curved. Moreover, Samsung is dominating the sales of 4K TVs in the region.

Tim Baxter, President and COO of Samsung Electronics America, said at CES 2015 that Samsung has captured a “60 percent share of the UHD TV market” and that its “TV market share is up five points” year-on-year.

All of which paints a rather promising picture of life you’re a Samsung TV executive. Its strength in the 4K market is even more of a fillip for the Korean brand when you consider it believes the 4K TV market will grow by four times in 2015 and “represent a third of all TVs sold” in the US.

Key to its plans to dominate the market includes its new range of ‘SUHD TVs’, no doubt confirming the belief that anything can be made better by putting an ‘S’ in front of it.

The naming does make a slight mockery of the newly formed UHD Alliance, however, whose stated aims are to reduce confusion among consumers. We’re not sure the advent of ‘SUHD’, a marketing invention if ever there was one, really helps that goal.

In any case, the SUHD TV range will be Samsung’s top-of-range TVs in 2015 and will ship with its new smart TV system based on Tizen OS, its own operating system.
