Capcom Resident Evil 2

In this era of unwanted reboots and remakes its nice to finally come across one people actually want...

Capcom has confirmed it planning a full remake of the 1998 classic video game Resident Evil 2, caving to years of demands from gamers.

Rather than simply issue a HD remaster of the much-loved survival horror game, the Japanese developer is going back to the drawing board with this one.

The announcement was made in a video posted to the Capcom YouTube channel on Wednesday, Yoshiki “H” Hirabayashi who revealed an awesome “WE DO IT!” t-shirt in the process.

The producer from Capcom’s R&D 1 Division said: “You’ve been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade and we haven’t been able to make it happen...until now.

“We are R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you’ve been waiting for.”

Capcom had previously floated the idea to gamers via the firm’s Facebook page, but the remake wasn’t official until today.

There’s no news yet on the chosen formats or potential release windows, but Hirabayashi said the firm will continue to deliver updates via the Facebook page.

However, as his team is starting from scratch, H said “it may be some time before we can bring you an update on this project.”

In the meantime, he said, fans of the franchise can look forward to the HD remaster of the original game, called Resident Evil Zero, set to arrive in early 2016.

The sequel to the third-person zombie thriller Resident Evil arrived in 1998 on PlayStation before being ported to other formats. It was one of the most celebrated games of the era, so news of a full remake is most welcome.

Absolutely loved this game to bits when it came out. Is the t-shirt an subtle poke at the "Engrish" of the English language script of the original? Hopefully there will be an "original mode" as well as they full remake- with phrases like "Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you." unlikely to make it through to a remake :)

Fantastic news. One small criticism though. Zero was not the original game. Yes, I realize that it was set before the first RE but that still doesn't make it the "original". That's like calling The Phantom Menace " the original Star Wars".
