Report: Sony PlayStation 4K to launch before PSVR hits shelves

The rumoured Sony PS4 upgrade is scheduled to arrive prior to the release of the PS VR headset, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal says the 4K capable machine is likely to be on shelves before the $400 virtual reality add on lands on October 31.

Recent reports have suggested the mid-cycle upgrade will boast a superior CPU and graphics chip and will be capable of supporting 4K content.

The idea is to give the PS4 more power to support and future proof the PSVR in its battle against the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Earlier today we brought word PS VR may some day also support the PC.

It is not yet known whether the upgraded PS4 will cost more than the current version or whether there’ll be an opportunity for the 36 million plus PS4 owners will be able to upgrade.

The WSJ’s report says there’ll be no differences in the software catalogues for the PS4 and the so called PS4K or PS4.5. Last week, reports claimed the 4K capable graphics won’t be solely focused on gaming.

When the console does launch, it seems fair to assume the console will be available as part of a bundle including the headset and various accessories.

The PSVR is currently in pre-order, quickly selling out at multiple retailers in both the US and the UK.

Sony has promised another flurry of headsets in the summer. Perhaps these will be accompanied by the new console?
