PS4 beats Xbox One to win TrustedReviews Award

The Sony PS4 is crowned the 2013 TrustedReviews Console of the Year

In what has been the most exciting year ever for the games industry, Sony’s PS4 has beaten the Xbox One to claim the TrustedReviews Console of the Year Award.

Taking top honours in one of the most hotly contested categories of the 2013 TrustedReviews Awards, the PS4 has claimed victory over its leading rival thanks to its collection of next-gen graphics and substantial online features package, all available at an affordable price.

With both next-gen consoles hitting the UK back in November, the PS4 has taken the console crown for 2013, with both the consumer vote and judges’ favour falling firmly on the side of the latest PlayStation offering.

A clear favourite with consumers, the PS4 raked in a staggering 49.73 per cent of the public vote, more than double the 19.71 per cent achieved by the rival Xbox One. Amazingly, the ageing PS3, with exclusives like The Last of Us, gave the newer Xbox One a run for its money, securing 11.21 per cent of the public vote.

It’s clear that momentum is behind the PS4 but the huge gap in the reader vote surprised me,” Evan Kypreos, Editor of TrustedReviews said.

“Microsoft got a lot wrong with the marketing of the Xbox One and has lost a lot of goodwill with gamers.”

While the PS4 has been awarded the 2013 TrustedReviews Console of the Year award, this year marks just the first of many head-to-head battles that will be fought between the latest PlayStation and the Xbox One.

“Personally, I don’t think that there’s much in it as products,” Kypreos added. “The Xbox One may well win out in the long term particularly in terms of the innovative new Kinect features, but Sony wins this year because it hasn’t alienated the masses.”

Earlier this month Sony confirmed that the PS4, a console we described as “a more gamer orientated console than the Xbox One” in our review, had notched up a staggering 2.1 million unit sales during the console’s first 18 days on sale.

Stay tuned to TrustedReviews throughout the coming week for all the latest on the other 2013 TrustedReviews Awards winners including who has taken the coveted Gadget of the Year, Smartphone of the Year and Game of the Year accolades.

Congrats to Sony for a marvelous job on their PR. You couldn't have represented the PlayStation any better. That said I personally don't believe that a console should win an award for price and PR alone because basically the console itself did not win the award the marketing behind its campaign did. I look forward to seeing more features in the future for both consoles that will drive us into a truly new next gen experience. Better graphics is a given, price is subject to change and is a personal preference as with the current features for both consoles. We still haven't come across anything that is jaw dropping for either system so its way too early to be handing out awards when the systems have only been out a month.

Actually he stated that ps4 won due to graphics and all the great psn incentives. He just mentioned the better PR as icing on the cake. Next time read the whole thing, don't skim it.

Working as described vs juddery multi - function!
1080p v 720p - If you cant see the difference then just stick to ps3/360 IMO.
I think thats enough at this time, it can be different for 2014.
Although for 2013 I think it the correct choice.

More powerful. Better graphics. Better controllers. Better looking. Smaller. Cheaper. No-brainer.

December 16, 2013, 2:22 pm

Well the main reason was the reader vote was so overwhelmingly in favour of the PS4. As judges, it's hard to ignore a 50% vote share for one product that's more than double the rest.

Have had my PS4 for the last couple of weeks (pre-ordered at GAME a couple of months ago), all I can say it has been a great experience, everything about it is so slick and fast, the machine looks great (very small and quiet for the amount of power it packs), the new PS4 controller is great, and games look and play absolutely fantastic.

Funnily, the only thing for me was getting used to using L2/R2 for aim and shoot for games like COD and Battlefield 4, instead on L1/R1 like the PS3, now I’ve got used to it, L2/R2 with my index fingers works really well.

For £350 the PS4 is an absolute gaming bargain, can't recommend it enough.

pretty much spot on.

Did you read my reply in instead of skimming it? If so you would have noticed that i addressed that also. Thanks

Both consoles are not fully functional. There are plenty of promised features that have not made it to launch that will be coming soon. With the PlayStation only being released now for a month and the xbox less than that. Why are handing out awards for only half the experience?

December 16, 2013, 5:32 pm

shame it has no games.

December 16, 2013, 5:43 pm

To be fair, with the current trend of FW updates. These comparisons need renewing each time an update comes out.
I agree that the ps4 is still missing some functionally that was promised. I guess Sony didn't want people to be disappointed by sketchy versions of the promised functionality!?

I expect everything that is on XB One but TV to be available on PS4 within time with FW updates.

So Yes, this does need to be revisited every few months or so.

December 16, 2013, 6:10 pm

yes, it is a wonderful games machine, deserves the success it is getting.

Trusted reviews lmao!

Lets get one thing straight: there is no such thing as a, 'console for gamers.' True gamers play on the PC, period. There is no competition and any argument against a PC is void before it even begins. That said, I wish people would stop buying these overpriced consoles. I mean seriously, you're dishing out $500+ hard earned dollars for hardware that is equivalent to a low-end PC gaming machine 2ish years old. I wouldn't pay more than $250 bills for either system. Furthermore, whats up with the micro-transactions in console gaming now? You pay $60 bucks for a game, and then you have to pay for additional content that should have been included or you have to enjoy a grind-fest similar to the ones found on cell phones to unlock it normally.... Seriously? Is this what 'console' games are going to become? I can't wait to see what EA brings to the table; I bet certain teams will be locked for purchase too - that will be the icing on the cake actually. :)

ps4 is much better

December 16, 2013, 9:39 pm

(1) No free games on Xbox one (although games with gold is supposed to eventually come to Xbox one the games with gold program needs a lot of help to compete with PS+ and PS4 users are just sitting back getting more free games while X1 doesn't even have it yet).
(2) Power - Huge difference in 720p native and 1080p native. Even the 720p and 900p that Battlefield 4 has is a pretty major difference. Going back and forth between them immediately it is very apparent. PS4 exclusives will shine with this extra power and the console will have much longer legs and overall more stability.
(3) Xbox one paywalls all basic features. No cross game chat, no internet browser, no streaming services, no video capture, no cable pass through without xbox live $60/yr = $300 everty 5 years. With PS4 the only paywall is online multiplayer and that is for non free to play games.
(4) Xbox is xbox. It's Microsoft...they have horrible customer policies. Halo 2 on PC Vista only, Orig Xbox service/support after 360 here, RROD to gain market share, paywall basic features, What they tried with X1 & Windows phone 7 Xbox video content forcing upgrades to Windows phone 8.
(5) Just look at the last 4 years of exclusives. PS3 is free online play but Sony kept dishing out huge AAA exclusives all the way to the end. While Microsoft just let the 360 fizzle out 4 years ago...only 2 or 3 exclusives a year for half it's life despite raking in 2.75 billion per year on XBL + revenue from ads on home page. They have proven that they will not support the console through it's entire life even if you give them billions upon billions.

Roadshow I don't think it's time 2 stick the 720 collar on it yet as nearly all the games launched bar fifa, need for speed and kill zone all had 2 be upscaled to 1080p. Forza is native 1080p on the xbone so is fifa and so is need for speed. Tomb raider which is been released in February is native 1080p on both consoles. Only time will tell with these consoles but if I'm not mistaken didnt the ps3 have more power last gen but games still looked better on 360. Microsoft work with the best studios and developers in the business so to say that the ps4 exclusives are going to shine in comparison to the xbones isn't entirely the truth. Even crytek, who make some of the most visually stunning games said that the ps4 would not get the maximum affect out of their games. You can read this for yourself online. The xbone was designed around gaming designers. Both consoles get to exactly the same point but via different routes. It isn't always about how much power you have it's about how you utilise the power that you do have. I do agree with you on the free games though. As a ms customer you pay more but get less in terms of freebies. The only thing you are really paying for is the dedicated servers.

Finally an honest article. There is hope after all.

December 17, 2013, 5:31 am

Actually I did, but you must have skimmed your own comment. You wrote "...I personally don't believe that a console should an award for price and PR [alone] and because basically the console itself did not win the award the marketing behind its campaign did." You did mention that graphics are a given but did not state that as a reason that ps4 won.

some of your points are complete nonsense you think Microsoft lost billions and give its self a bad reputation with RROD to gain market share, free games are good but if I'm paying for a service I want a top notch service not some half arsed unsecured crap that makes up by giving you free games but not the service you are paying for hopefully that will change now the PS4 is out.

December 17, 2013, 12:54 pm

Brian even in the article it mentioned that the ps4 won the award because it didn't alienate its audience. That's not saying the console isn't great its saying that it won for the wrong reasons. Better graphics is a given for next gen consoles but some would say that xbox has better looking games. So it comes down to preference. It too early to be given out awards especially when we still have the PS3 and 360 out and more established than these consoles. These are but beta test kits at best for what's to come. Some people that own a PS4 will argue that it deserve it because they bought it and want it to be successful. I like both consoles for one reason or another but i can't deny that they are currently only half the experience.

December 17, 2013, 1:00 pm

I agree 100%. This is an award based on a particular groups preference instead of fans of gaming in general. Everyone has their own opinion about their choice so it does the industry an injustice by not including everyone and everything concerning these new consoles.

"True gamers play on the PC, period" no some do some "true" gamers never touch a P.C.
what do you mean no competition thousands of shops sell consoles and software also "you're dishing out $500+ hard earned dollars for hardware that is equivalent to a low-end PC gaming machine 2ish years old" remains to be seen and if this is the case why do MS and Sony make so little money
