Netflix will begin streaming 4K content in the first months of 2014, it’s been confirmed.
Earlier in the year we reported on Netflix’s ambitious goal to shoot the second series of House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, in the new Ultra HD resolution. Sure enough, when season two kicks of in February it will be 4K-ready.
At present, the company’s 4K plans represent “a set of sample offerings, not a big part of the catalogue,” but it has been testing various 4K streams in recent months.
Hunt believes that it’s important Netflix leverages its unique position in the industry – it’s responsible for both producing and delivering content – to “get out front and begin to push” 4K. As such, the company could well prove to be “instrumental in beginning the shift of production towards 4K.”
