Motorola chief leaving in Lenovo reshuffle

Lenovo has announced that current Motorola CEO Rick Osterloh is to vacate his position as the Chinese company instigates a major reshuffle.

Osterloh has been CEO of Motorola since 2014, when he guided the company through its ownership transition from Google to Lenovo.

It seems as if Osterloh has been pushed out amidst a major restructuring at the parent company. Lenovo is expanding its PC business to include tablets and phablets, as well as smart home and gaming products, under the new PC & Smart Device Business Unit. This unit will be led by Gianfranco Lanci, Lenovo’s current president and chief operating officer.

What’s left of Motorola’s and Lenovo’s mobile business will fall under the  Mobile Business Group, which will be headed up by co-presidents Xudong Chen and Aymar de Lencquesaing under CEO Yang Yuanqing.

Lenovo didn’t have too much to say about departing Motorola chief Osterloh. “His steady leadership since Lenovo’s acquisition is appreciated and Lenovo wishes him continued success in the future,” was about the sum of it.

“The talent and innovation capabilities in Motorola are among Lenovo’s strongest advantages in mobile, so the Motorola teams will continue to enable the entire MBG (mobile business group), including in China,” adds the company.

Earlier in the year it emerged that Lenovo was phasing out the Motorola brand altogether. The Moto brand will continue, however, alongside Lenovo’s existing Vibe brand.
