Moto Skip 2 accessory will help users track down errant phones

Motorola’s Skip accessory, which allows users to by-pass security settings when close to an enabled smartphone, is all set for a revamp, according to reports on Monday.

The guitar pick sized NFC-based tool proved handy for Moto X users who preferred not to enter a pin code or pattern every time they wished to access the device.

According to a new filing at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, a new iteration of the Skip will boast expanded functionality.

The new version, which can be attached via a lanyard rather than clipping onto the device, will also allow users to locate a misplaced phone by double-tapping the power button to prompt the Android device to ring.

It will also allow users to find their keys if the fob is attached to the keyring rather than the phone. The FCC filing details a new Bluetooth-enabled smartphone app that will keep track of the new Skip and help users keep track of errant items.

The app will show the keys on a map as well as prompt a beeping alert from the Skip accessory.

Both new pieces of functionality will enable users to track down items when leaving the house, for example.

According to the filing, the new Skip will only work with Motorola phones. We’d expect it to be revealed alongside the Moto X 1 at the company’s press conference at IFA next week.
