Look out PayPal, Apple Pay reportedly coming to the web

Apple Pay

Apple Pay will begin an expansion to the web next week at WWDC, according to reports on Friday.

Digital Trends sources say Cupertino is partnering with as-yet-unknown select retailers to offer easy payments.

As yet it’s unclear whether consumers will need a fingerprint-enabled device to use Apple Pay or whether it’ll be possible to log in with an Apple ID.

Previous reports have suggested Apple is only planning to extend functionality to fingerprint-enabled iOS devices through the Safari browser.

It’s possible that this plays into recent reports suggested Apple is planning to bring fingerprint sensors to its range of MacBook laptops.

The expansion would place Apple in a strong position to challenge PayPal, the clear leader in the sector for well over a decade.

According to the source cited in the report, Apple Pay will be ‘much easier and quicker to use’ than PayPal on iOS devices.

Elsewhere at WWDC, which kicks-off with Monday’s keynote, we expect to see new versions of iOS, Mac OS X and Apple watchOS.
