London's black cabs to give you a heads up on traffic jams

Black cabs in London will be making it easier to keep up to date with traffic problems.

Transport for London is testing out digital signs which will be placed on top of black cabs to warn nearby vehicles of surrounding traffic problems.

The trial starts today and will see 200 black cabs fitted with the signage for six months.

Traffic warnings won’t be the only thing to be shown on the boards, which will also feature advertising.

At this point, the tech can be used to provide information on delays in up to 50 areas in the capital.

The idea is to improve the information shown on the boards if and when TfL decide to go ahead with a wider deployment.

Black cabs have faced tough times recently as the rise of Uber has threatened the traditional transport method in London.

TfL recently lost a court case against Uber when it was determined that the smartphone app did not constitute a meter and therefore the company was legal in London.

Whether the new signs will help to improve things for black cabs remains to be seen, but it certainly demonstrates an effort to keep up with the digital age.
