LG has revealed its 2013 TV range ahead of the typical CES showcase.
The Korean company has issued a release claiming that its so-called ‘CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup’ will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Display in Las Vegas from January 8.
The onus of the 19-strong line-up is on intuitive content access. To that end there’ll be an updated Magic Remote with voice recognition and motion sensitivity, and a new Smart Home on-screen interface with special folders for apps and other content.
At the top end of the range, as reported by CNET, is LG’s already-launched 84-inch UHD (also known as 4K) LCD TV. As we reported throughout 2012, the LG 84LM960V is notable for its immense resolution that roughly quadruples the number of pixels on screen as it will for its huge size.
A little smaller but no less impressive will be a 55-inch OLED TV. OLED TVs have been long-promised, but have take a while to come about owing to the cost and challenge of producing them at such a size and in such bulk.
We’ve already seen the benefits of OLED in smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 – the technology provides more vibrant colours and deeper blacks than LCD can manage – so we’re looking forward to seeing it make its way into mainstream TV sets in 2013.
Those are LG’s two top-end contenders for 2013, but for something a little more in your price range there’s the LA8600 and the LA7400. These both provide edge-lit LED backlights with local dimming and 240MHz refresh rates. They’ll also feature a pop-up camera for Skype calls and the like. Both will come in 60 and 55-inch versions, while the LA7400 will also come in a 47-inch version.
There’ll also be variants of these top-end mainstream TV sets equipped with Google TV and accompanying Qwerty remotes.
Lower down the range (and of more interest to normal folk) is the LA900, which will come with 3D, 120Hz processing and local dimming.
One overall trend that’s worth commenting about in the 2013 LG TV range is the reduction of plasma models from six to three. It seems as if LCD is the present and OLED is the near future, with little room for the other established TV panel technology.
2013’s leading 60PH6700 plasma model has a single 60-inch size, a dual-core processor, 3D and all the smart TV features of the other sets.
