iOS 8 adoption hits 60 per cent

Apple’s iOS 8 software is now residing on 60 per cent of the firm’s iPhone and iPad devices, following its release in mid-September.

According to official statistics published to Apple’s developer website, the majority of users are now on the latest version of the operating system for the first time.

With iOS 8 adoption hitting 60 per cent, that leaves 35 per cent of users on iOS 7. The remaining 5 per cent of App Store registrations came on older versions of iOS.

The news will come as a relief to Apple, which has experienced slower than normal adoption rates for a number of reasons.

A little over a month ago, we reported adoption had virtually halted at 47 percent, boasting only a marginal 1 per cent improvement in the two weeks following September 21.

That may have been down to a myriad of release issued experienced by early adopters, including one such update that disabled Touch ID and cellular connectivity on the new iPhones 6 and 6 Plus.

Now Apple has stabilised iOS 8 with a number of new versions (we’re now on iOS 8.1.1) more users appear to be jumping on board with the software. It would also make sense that more users in the United States are now jumping on board to give the new Apple Pay platform a try.

The new figures will also include all of the new iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 devices sold with iOS 8 right out of the box.
