HMV gift cards to be honoured from tomorrow

High street retailer HMV has announced that as of tomorrow it will once again honour all existing HMV gift cards.

The music, film and game retailer caused public outrage last week after HMV gift cards were confirmed to be no longer valid at the stores, following the company filing for administration.

From tomorrow, Tuesday 22, customers will now be able to redeem their previously worthless cards in stores.

“Since our appointment as Joint Administrators on Tuesday afternoon, we have been urgently assessing the Companies’ financial position,” said Nick Edwards, Joint Administrator at Deloitte. “I am pleased to confirm that, having concluded this assessment, we are able to honour gift cards.”

The announcement follows several stories depicting public outrage in HMV stores, including a story last week where police were called to an Oxford HMV outlet after two customers refused to leave when they were informed their gift cards were no longer valid.

Deloitte has also said that money raised by HMV through the sale of charity singles will be paid in its entirety to the relevant charities.

“I can also confirm that all money raised by HMV for various charities will be paid in full. We recognise that both these matters have caused concern for individuals and organisations affected and are pleased to have reached a positive outcome.”

HMV filed for administration on January 15th after increased competition from online retailers. The stores are continuing to trade while Deloitte attempts to find a buyer for the high street chain’s 239 premises.

News of HMV’s financial difficulties puts around 4350 jobs at risk, with camera retailer Jessops and electronics chain Comet having already closed all their stores in the last few months causing huge numbers of redundancies.
