GTA VR might be coming sooner than you think

GTA maker Rockstar will make VR versions of its hit games just as soon as gamers are ready.

The latest iteration of Rockstar's infamous open world crime sim, Grand Theft Auto, has been in the news recently after it surpassed 65 million sales. If such a behemoth were to ever show up on a VR platform, it would represent an almighty push for the emerging format.

There have been unofficial VR mods for GTA 5 for some time now, of course, but the thought of the real deal showing up one day is an enticing one.

So what are the chances of a VR-enhanced GTA (or Red Dead Redemption for that matter)? Publisher Take-Two Interactive has had its say on the matter in a recent investor relations call.

"I've talked about VR in the past-there's a lot of excitement in the marketplace, and a lot of our people are excited too," said CEO Strauss Zelnick (via Tweaktown). "We're still in our R&D route because this still isn't a consumer business."

All of which sounds like a bit of a downer on the whole GTA VR idea. But Zelnick's next comments are a little more encouraging.

"If this is the consumer's platform of choice, we'll bring our IP's to it aggressively and ambitiously," he said.

In other words, if VR gaming takes off in a big way with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or PlayStation VR, Rockstar will be there with a virtual reality version of GTA in a shot.

With two of those three VR gaming systems now on the market, and PlayStation VR coming in October, Rockstar could potentially get the go ahead within a year or two. This could even mean (though we're really speculating here) that GTA VI ships with a VR mode. Exciting!
