GTA 5 sales have topped more than $1 billion (£625m) during the game’s opening three days on sale as the Rockstar developed title continues to set records.

Having broken a number of day one sales records both in the UK and globally, Rockstar has now suggested the long awaited game has become the fastest selling entertainment release of all time.

"Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company said. "We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V."

The game has become the fastest entertainment release to achieve the $1bn sales milestone, eclipsing the 15 days it took last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 to hit the same figure and the 17 days taken by blockbuster Avatar.

Earlier this week it was revealed that day one GTA 5 sales had topped $800 million globally, with a staggering 1.57 million copies sold in the UK alone during the game’s first 24 hours on sale.

This £65 million day one take accounted for more than a third of the game’s total budget, with the latest Grand Theft Auto instalment having set records before launch as the most expensive game ever made at £170 million.

While Tuesday’s GTA 5 release date saw the game made available for Xbox 360 and PS3 only, Rockstar has failed to bring the game to PC or confirmed planned next-gen launches. Angering some gamers, petitions have started in a bid to convince the developer to bring GTA 5 to PC.
