Flipboard today launched its previous mobile-only service on the desktop through a new web portal.
This marks Flipboard’s first foray into desktop-based accessibility, and hopes to retain the same refined app-style aesthetic on your browser.
Mike McCue, Flipboard’s CEO and co-founder, said: “This release transforms Flipboard from a mobile download to a ubiquitous service, a single place to keep up on your interests.”
“Coming to the Web means it’s not only easier for existing users to browse Flipboard throughout the day, but the barrier to entry for new users is much lower – now people who have never tried Flipboard have a simple way to get started.”
The website can, unsurprisingly, be accessed via the www.flipboard.com domain.
It’s set to be much the same as the app. Anyone with a Flipboard account can access all the sources, topics, magazines, and people they already follow on the new website.
“For the past 5 years, we’ve been crafting smarter and more beautiful designs with each release,” explained McCue.
“On the web we are able to implement some new breakthrough ideas. When we first started Flipboard we could not have built it for the web because desktops and browsers just weren’t powerful enough.”
Flipboard recently introduced 34,000 topics, an impressive roster which included ‘adventure travel’ and ‘zero tolerance’.
First-time users are prompted to pick seven or more topics, which then lead to further topic suggestions.
Flipboard will then create your custom magazine, chock full of hopefully relevant content.
The service hopes the new desktop edition will make it easier to share stories and access content.
