Ubisoft has confirmed the Far Cry 4 co-op will be limited to the game's "open world sections", rather than to the storyline itself.
Speaking to TrustedReviews, Far Cry 4 Senior Level Designer Vincent Ouellette revealed that the game's co-op will only be available outside of story levels.
"[Keys to Kyrat] is for a limited time. You get two hours to play the game, but that can be broken down to different sections," explained Ouellette.
"The co-op is limited to the open world portions of the game. So your friend invites you in and you can do as much stuff as you want in two hours – go as far as you can."
That goes for the Keys to Kyrat feature on the PS4 and for the regular co-operative functionality for Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. Although you won't be able to play through the story missions with your friends, you will be able to take on enemy outposts and fortresses with a buddy, and obviously explore the Himalayan landscape.
The PS4 unique Keys to Kyrat feature was announced at E3 2014 and lets you invite your friends to play Far Cry 4 for up to ten two hour sessions even if they don't own the game themselves. It is based on the PS4 Share Play technology, but is the first game to demonstrate such functionality.
"We’re really proud of that deal with Sony. I think it’s great, we’re all – the team at [Ubisoft] Montreal – we’re all passionate and love our gaming. I think most people will want to be able to give it a try. A deal like that is amazing."
"I’d like to see more games doing this kind of thing [Keys to Karat]. I think it’s great."
Ouelette went on to say that playing Far Cry 4 with a friend will totally change the way the game's story is told.
"As soon as you have a friend jump into your game, the story is not told by the game anymore. It’s the story that you make up with your friends. A game like Far Cry has so many toys and gadgets and that huge open world that you can just cause chaos in and do all those crazy things inside that. So it’ll be great to have a friend to come and f**k things up with you."
