Facebook’s bid to own breaking news set to launch next week

Facebook’s in-development breaking news app Notify will launch to the masses next week, according to reports.

The Financial Times reports the app will roll out next week and benefit from partnerships with “dozens” of high profile media partners.

Previous reports have revealed the standalone app as new way for news organisations to distribute their content.

The app will deliver a Twitter-like “blast” to smartphone users, with a short description of the story accompanied by a URL link.

Vogue, Mashable, The Washington Post, CNN and Comedy Central are among Facebook’s partners, according to the report.

Users will be able to choose which sources or ‘stations’ they receive notifications from.

The roll out is seemingly scheduled less than a month after the company rolled out Instant Articles to all iPhone users.

That platform enables news organisations to easily publish entire stories to their Facebook pages, meaning users don’t have to leave the site to read, watch or listen.

News is increasingly becoming an important battleground in the social arena. Notify will challenge Twitter’s new Moments feature, while Apple’s News aggregator looks to top both social behemoths.
