Facebook now lets you search for specific posts

Facebook has updated its search function to enable you to search for specific posts.

It sounds like a pretty basic task, but prior to this recent update, you could only search for Facebook contacts using Facebook Search.

According to a recent Facebook newsroom post, user feedback from the Graph Search tool that launched last July has informed it of users’ desire to be able to search for specific previous posts. We’d have thought that would have been pretty obvious, but there you go.

Now, “with a quick search, you can get back to a fun video from your graduation, a news article you’ve been meaning to read, or photos from your friend’s wedding last summer.”

As before, you’ll only get results that have been shared with you, so it’s not a way to trawl the entire back catalogue of meaningless Facebook posts. Thank goodness.

Examples used on the new Facebook Search website include searching for simple terms like “cookie recipe” or “kauai,” and having posts that have been shared with you containing those trigger words appearing in the results.

These search updates have been applied to both Facebook on desktop and the iPhone app, and they’re rolling out in the US starting this week. Once that rollout is complete (which could take a couple of weeks), Facebook will commence work bringing it to other regions, as well as to the Android platform.
