Enhanced Football Manager Handheld version being considered

An enhanced version of the Football Manager Handheld mobile game is being considered by developer Sports Interactive.

Currently there is one version of Football Manager Handheld available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices, but as mobile technology becomes increasingly more powerful, Sports Interactive is considering taking advantage of that hardware.

“We continue to work on the mobile game just as hard as we do on the PC and Mac game. We’ve got a bit of a dichotomy really when it comes to the mobile stuff, because you now have some high-end devices that are actually really powerful. They are as powerful as the low end PCs that we support, or the low end Macs that we support, with the game,” explained Sports Interactive Studio Director, Miles Jacobson speaking to TrustedReviews.

“But you also still have a lot of low end devices out there, particularly on Android. On iOS people tend to upgrade, but on Android they tend to keep their phones for a long time. So we have to support both really. At the moment we’re supporting all devices with one game. But that’s something that might change in the future. There are discussions being had at the moment around do we release something specifically for the high-end devices and keep the current one for the low-end devices.”

Jacobson added that the company didn’t want to risk losing the players using low-end or older generation devices, especially the younger audience.

Currently, Football Manager Handheld isn’t quite the same as the PC, Mac and Linux version. It’s well worth playing, but it is a stripped back version of the desktop edition.

“I would like the mobile to [get closer to the PC version], but whether it’s technically possible yet, we’re not sure. For us as a studio, we’re maybe not known for being the most technologically advanced studio, but if you take a look at what we did with PS Vita last year, where we actually released a game where you could take your saves from your PC and Mac and play them on your Vita. And then send them back to your PC and Mac.”

“That’s the holy grail of what we would like to do. But whether any device is powerful enough yet or not for that, we won’t know until we start investigating it properly next year.”
