Ed Sheeran’s music has always racked up formidable stats on streaming services, but his latest milestone is seriously impressive.
Spotify has just announced that Ed Sheeran is the first artist to have a song played over 500 million times.
The song in question is “Thinking Out Loud”, and was officially released on September 24 last year as part of the album X.
“Chuffed to hear that Thinking Out Loud has had half a billion plays on Spotify,” says Ed Sheeran, responding to the news. “Being the first artist to hit that milestone is amazing.”

According to Spotify, around 19 million people listen to Sheeran every single month.
What’s more, his songs have reportedly been streamed around 2.9 billion times in total, and are included on 38 million different playlists.

To celebrate Sheeran’s big win, Spotify has whipped up a heat map that displays the artist’s fandom by country.
Titled ‘The Sheerio Index’, it reveals that Denmark is the world leader for most Ed Sheeran listening per Spotify.
That’s followed by Norway, Singapore, and Sweden, with the United Kingdom taking fifth spot.
