EA suggests consoles will face ‘stiff competition’ from Apple and Google

Despite having only just come to market, the Xbox One and PS4 will soon face “stiff competition” from the likes of Apple and Google, EA CEO Andrew Wilson has predicted.

With the two next-gen consoles having hit British soil in recent weeks, the Electronic Arts head has claimed that Sony and Microsoft could soon have a fight on their handset to retain dominance in the living room entertainment stakes.

According to the publishing giant, both Apple and Google pose a serious threat to the Xbox One and PS4, with both companies currently working on their own home entertainment systems.

“Our market is evolving at a very, very, very rapid rate,” Wilson said in a recent interview.

Although suggesting that the two gaming giants currently have things their own way, he has suggested this will not be the case for much longer.

“I think that Microsoft and Sony have a real opportunity to build a strong following and a strong install base while they continue to be the single best way to get high fidelity, high definition interactive entertainment to your 80-inch television,” Wilson told GamesIndustry.

He added: “If you think about Microsoft’s strategy–and I think Sony shares some of this in their long-term view, of being a broader entertainment device in your living room–I think they have that time.”

Looking to the future, however, he stated: “I think that three years from now, four years from now, they’re going to be under some fairly stiff competition for the living room, from mobile providers, from Apple, from Google, from Roku, from Comcast, to try and own that living room experience.”

Although it is not believed that Apple and Google’s home entertainment efforts will focus as heavily on gaming as the Xbox One and PS4, both are known to be working on wider products.

With Apple TV and Google TV units both having been doing the rounds for a number of years, Apple is expected to launch its first own-branded television set next year.
