BT: ‘nearly every customer’ reconnected after broadband outage

BT says it has reconnected ‘nearly every customer’ affected by today’s broadband outage which saw thousands of customers hit.

The website Down Detector showed connectivity issues being reported which, according to the site, started coming in at 9.50am, although most complaints seem to have started early in the afternoon.

A BT spokesperson said: “Large numbers of customers have been experiencing temporary issues with their broadband services this afternoon. Customers can still receive and make calls as normal.
 
“We’ve been working hard to fix the issue and are glad to report that nearly every customer affected is now reconnected, approximately two hours after the problem started.
 
“We apologise to any affected customers for the inconvenience.
 
“There is no evidence at this stage to suggest that we were subject to a malicious attack.”

Prior to the statement BT responded to complaints on its official Twitter profile with the following tweet:

Affected areas, according to Down Detector, included Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, and Birmingham, with London seemingly the worst hit.

There were also reports of BT’s website crashing.

Customers have took to Twitter, using the hashtag #BTdown to register their feelings about the issue.
