Apple has announced OS X El Capitan as the latest edition of its Mac operating system.
OS X El Capitan features several new upgrades, particularly focused on improving your experience and the performance of your Mac and enhancing the built-in apps.
OS X El Capitan is available to developers in beta now, with a public beta starting in July.
For everyone else, you can download the full El Capitan experience sometime this autumn for free.
Apple’s Craig Federighi started off with the improvements coming to Spotlight and Search with OS X El Capitan.
Well, first he showed off a gimmicky new gesture that finds your cursor on the screen when you wiggle your fingers on the touchpad or the mouse.
There are other new gestures too. For example, swiping your two fingers to the right on an email to mark it unread, while two fingers swiped to the left can simply delete it.
One thing we particularly like is the Pinned Sites feature for Safari. If you’ve got a tab open that you use a lot – like Twitter or Facebook for example, you can drag it to the side to keep it as a Pinned Site for easy access. You can open related tabs, but that pin won’t ever leave unless you want it to.
Plus, Safari has another new feature. Those annoying videos or ads that start playing in any window can now be muted. You can mute them by clicking a new speaker icon in the address bar, or just navigate directly to the offending page.
Back to search though, you’re looking at a more useful search that looks at more places to give you better results – weather and sports score being just two examples given at WWDC.
In Mail, you could search for “Mail I ignored from Phil”, or search for “Documents I worked on last June” in Finder. You can use this enhanced search in other apps too.
Mission Control has also been enhanced with OS X El Capitan, to make multitasking much easier.
You can finally snap windows to one side or the other for one. While you’re running an app on one side, you could have an expose of all your other apps on the other. Or just have two apps running side by side.
OS X El Capitan will also let you drag and drop content from one window to the other.
Apple has also introduced the Spaces Bar. This will appear when you drag a window to the top of your screen. You can make that window run full screen in its own Space, or launch it splitscreen with another app.
This has affected Mail too. When it’s running in full screen you can now minimise compose windows to the base of the Mail app, or even launch compose tabs when you need to reply to something quickly. 
There’s also big performance increases coming with OS X El Capitan, making a lot of things run faster – apparently.
According to Federighi, El Capitan will increase app launches by 1.4 times, app switching 2 times faster, 2 times faster for displaying mail messages, and it’ll make opening PDFs in Preview 4 times as fast.
Metal is also coming to Mac, paving the way for better levels of detail and realism in games.
