Apple Music will be the exclusive home of the Carpool Karaoke spin off

Apple has announced a major original content splash by snapping up the rights to screen the spin-off of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke video series.

The segment, which features musicians and celebrities singing along with the British comedian on a car ride, currently appears on The Late Late Show in the United States.

Apple has bought the rights to the viral hit’s standalone show and plans to screen it via the Apple Music streaming service.

We love music, and Carpool Karaoke celebrates it in a fun and unique way that is a hit with audiences of all ages,” Eddy Cue, senior vice president of internet software and services at Apple, said in a statement.

“It’s a perfect fit for Apple Music — bringing subscribers exclusive access to their favourite artists and celebrities who come along for the ride.”

According to Apple’s announcement, there will be 16 weekly episodes of the show, distributed exclusively to the 15 million or so Apple Music subscribers.

The purchase makes sense for Apple, which wants to augment its music streaming service with original video content, rather than make a play on Netflix’s turf.

So far the Carpool Karaoke segment has featured luminaries like One Direction, Elton John and, most recently, the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.

The licensing deal will also ensure Corden continues to present the segment as part of his own show on CBS in the US.
