Android gamers can now record and share their finest moments to YouTube

Google has updated its Play Games hub to include support for capturing and sharing Android games.

Within the new version of the app, revealed on the Android blog, users will be able to select the game they want to play and then choose to record the footage at high or standard definition.

They’ll even be able to add audio commentary and a thumbnail video of themselves using the front-facing camera to accompany the action on screen.

The app will also tell you how much space is being consumed on your device as the video progresses, which will be helpful for those who often get a little too immersed in the world of Minecraft

Once the session is complete, gamers will be able to edit the footage and then upload it to YouTube, where it’ll sit on the new YouTube gaming hub.

The new app follows an YouTube Gaming update last week which allowed gamers to stream directly from their Android smartphones

Android gamers in the US and the UK will be first to get in on the new feature, which will give YouTube more ammunition in its battle against Amazon-owned Twitch.

The two companies are embroiled in a multi-billion dollar battle to be home for game spectators, which have shot up in number over the last few years.

Considering the exponential growth of the sector and the improving quality of mobile games compared with their desktop and console counterparts, this appears to be a smart move from Google.

Gamers playing essentially the same game on their phones, as is the case with the likes of Minecraft, can have a complete set up in their hands, without the need to buy additional microphones, headsets or webcams capable of capturing video.

The update lands on Android smartphones and tablets in the coming days, but there’s no news on when it might roll out for Android TV users.
