Marware has a range of covers for the Kindle 4 and the one we are looking at today is the EcoFlip which is a flip-style cover which lets you prop your Kindle up for hands-free reading.
Like the rest of the Eco range from Marware, the EcoFlip features an eco-friendly leather exterior which which is compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive meaning manufacturing processes which minimizes toxic waste and runoff were used in he case’s production.
While this is all well and good, the end result is not great, with a very plasticky feel to the finish which doesn’t offer a premium feel we would have expected from a Kindle cover which costs £30. Also the EcoFlip is only available in one colour, so if black is not your thing, then you’re out of luck.
The only thing breaking the exterior black leather cover is a black elastic strap on the bottom of the cover which keeps the cover secured whether open or closed. The case is certainly attractive and the minimalist styling will appeal to many.
The interior is lined with microsuede to help protect your Kindle’s screen from scratches. Your Kindle is kept in place by four small elastic strips and we found that our Kindle was kept in place very securely even while in your backpack or handbag.
On the opposing side, you’ll find an integrated hand-strip to let you read your Kindle one-handed, however you ability to turn pages and/or press the lock screen button is severely limited while using this system. There is also a narrow pocket (for credit cards, money, business cards etc.) on this side which is just a bit too narrow for our liking and awkward getting items back out of.
The case is relatively slim and weighs just 123g meaning it won’t add too much bulk to the slim lines of your Kindle. In use the cover works well for the most part, giving unrestricted access to the page turning buttons and navigation buttons below the screen. However accessing the screen lock/unlock button is not as easy, and can be very frustrating when you want to turn your Kindle off in a hurry.
For those who want to, the EcoFlip also gives you the option of propping the Kindle up on its own so you can read hands-free. This could be useful if reading a recipe while cooking, but we can’t think of too many other situations where this would come in handy. However the EcoFlip cover is sturdy enough when propped up so you don’t have to worry about your Kindle falling over.
Verdict
The Marware EcoFlip is a Kindle cover which gives you the choice of reading with two hands, one hand or even no hands. While it has eco-friendly credentials, the finish does not feel very premium, but its subtle, minimal design is appealing and its lightweight and slim profile means it is portable and discreet.
