Grand Theft Auto 3 was released ten years ago. Ten years ago. As people who remember those days fondly, this makes us feel old. However, thanks to the wizards at Rockstar, you can now re-experience the game in the most modern way there is - on your mobile phone. Or tablet.
The graphics are beginning to look dated, even on iOS devices, but it's a title that demonstrated the sheer effort and attention to detail that goes into the top AAA console titles. Alternatives like Gameloft's Gangstar games do not come close to offering the quality or quantity of content here.
It's not without downsides. Top of the list are the controls. As Rockstar has only the touchscreen to work with, it has had to jam approximately 547 buttons into a small part of a 9.7in display - hardly perfect. But, given how impossible this should be, the game works extremely well. Once your fingers have gotten used to dancing between virtual pads the size of pennies, it's still perfectly playable - and lots of fun.
A release that proves most "console quality" gaming on iOS has a long way to go, Grand Theft Auto 3 wipes the floor with the open world competition.
