Introduction

Brother is extending its range of novel, landscape A4 printers with the MFC-J4710DW, which does more than single-feed A3 prints. With previous machines, you could slip an A3 sheet into the single-sheet slot at the back and catch it when it fed out the front. This machine can do that too, but it has twin trays, one of which can be dedicated to A3 paper.

Brother MFC-J4710DW - Design and Features

Looking much the same as previous models in the range, with its small footprint design and smart black and white styling, the MFC-J4710DW is taller, to accommodate 150-sheet and 250-sheet trays as standard. The top tray can be used for A4 down to 15 x 10cm paper, while the bottom one has an extendable design, so it can be used for A4 or A3 sheets.

To use it with A3, you telescope the tray out and adjust its cover. This is a marvel of Japanese engineering, but also deceptive. The top of the paper tray cantilevers up in front of the A4 output tray, extending the area of support for the larger paper. In doing so, it increases the footprint of the printer dramatically and looks a bit plastic and flimsy, but it worked without problem.

The top surface of the machine is completely flat, but hides a low-profile, 20-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) when you flip up the centre section of the cover. The ADF feeds paper out on top of its feed tray, and has a duplex scan head, scanning both sides of a page in a single pass.

Brother MFC-J4710DW - Controls and Interface

The control panel consists of a 93mm touchscreen and a dedicated touch number pad for fax dialling. The machine includes full fax functionality and can handle up to six groups, broadcast to 200 locations and has a receive/transmit memory of up to 400 pages.

A little flip-down cover to the left of the control panel conceals SD, MemoryStick and USB/Pictbridge slots, making photo print on the machine easy. Under the scanner section, which hinges up, are USB and 10/100 Ethernet sockets, though the most flexible connection is wireless. Brother supports Airprint, Google Cloudprint and direct print via its Android app.
